James | 06th Dec 2023

One of India’s most impressive religious sites, the Golden Temple, is situated in Amritsar, a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage and significance in Amritsar tourism as the heart of the Sikh religion since the late sixteenth century.

The name of Sikhism’s holiest temple, or gurdwara, built in 1601, originates from its gold plating, which glimmers across a significant part of its exterior, reflecting the surrounding light and the surface of the nearby lake.

Amritsar derives its name from the sacred pool, known as the “Holy Pool of Nectar,” which lies at the city’s heart. Additionally, the older section, home to the Golden Temple and characterized by its narrow lanes and bustling bazaars, contrasts with the modern area filled with restaurants, hotels, and cafes reminiscent of the nation’s capital.

Attari-Wagah Border

The Wagah Border between Pakistan and India

A short rickshaw ride from Amritsar (Punjab) will bring you to the Wagah Border with Pakistan. This is both one of the partition’s most enduring and obvious legacies and one of the most recognizable border crossings in the entire world.

During this time, soldiers from both nations took part in ceremonies for changing the guard and the beating retreat. As a result of routine military drills, soldiers lower the national flag on both sides of the border every day. Since 1959, this practice has continued.

In conclusion, every day at 4.15 p.m. in the winter and 5.15 p.m. in the summer, the border between India and Pakistan hosts a colourful and competitive show. Additionally, hundreds visit to cheer for India each day, and you’ll glimpse people supporting Pakistan on the other side of the border.

Unlike other ceremonies, this whole ceremony offered spectators a colourful treat. Since there are no reserved seats, arrive early and bring a pair of binoculars for a better view of the ceremony! It’s a bizarre experience, unlike any other border in the world.

Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar tourism is more than just a public park; it also serves as a sombre memorial, commemorating one of the most terrible chapters in India’s freedom struggle.

This place is haunted by the heinous massacre of hundreds of unarmed Indian men, women, and children by the British Army in 1919. Today, Jallianwala Bagh is a revered national memorial and one of the most popular historical tourist places in Amritsar.

Jallianwala Bagh is open every day from 6:30 a.m. until around 7:30 p.m. and is free to all visitors. Further, exploring this site is essential to comprehend the breadth of Amritsar Punjab Tourism and its historical significance.

Jallianwala Bagh History

To sum up its history, during the reign of the Sikh Empire, Jallianwala Bagh was the private property of the family of Himmat Singh (One of the Five Beloved Ones in Sikhism)

It is believed that it was once a garden house or a garden. However, in 1919, Jallianwala Bagh was nothing more than an uneven land surrounded by a 10-foot-high wall with only one exit.

Apart from the huge number of people who were killed by the bullets, several died after being crushed in the stampede that took place due to the firing. Furthermore, many helpless people jumped 20 feet deep into the garden to escape the bullets and died there.

British official sources declared that 379 people had died and around 1200 were injured. On the other hand, the Indian National Congress estimated that 1000 had died and 1500 were wounded.

This incident, which is still considered one of the most tragic incidents in India’s history, came to be known as the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre or the Amritsar Massacre. The Government of India established a memorial inside the garden in 1951 to honour the martyrs of that fateful day.
