Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary: A Hidden Gem In The Heart Of Goa

The zoo is called Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary. Goa govt has decided to rationalize the entry fee in all its Wildlife sanctuaries and the only zoo located at Bondla. The zoo and wildlife sanctuary is visited by approximately 1.5 lakh tourists annually.

Forest officials claim that due to this step by the government, there would be an addition of Rs.40 lakhs in the existing revenue collection, which is in the range of Rs.50 lakh to Rs.60 lakh.

The Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is located close to Usgao, at the junction of Ponda, Sanguem and Sattari talukas. Bondla’s moist deciduous forests interspersed with evergreens are the habitat of a wide variety of flora and fauna. Bondla is the least rugged of Goa’s sanctuaries, with manicured gardens to boot. Its proximity to Ponda’s temple trail ensures that it has lots of visitors.

Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary has situated 52 km from Panaji in the foothills of the Western Ghats in Goa. The area of this sanctuary is 8 square km. It includes a Mini Zoo, Deer Safari Park, Formal Gardens, Botanic Gardens and a few Ecotourism Cottages.

The zoo provides a glimpse of the animal species found in the sanctuary while the botanical garden houses a large variety of exotic plants. The Nature Education Center in the sanctuary is an effort to bring nature close to people. Apart from a number of exhibits, the library of the centre screens videos and cine movies to tourists and young kids.
