The Hutheesing Temple History

The Hutheesing temple is located outside the Delhi Gate to the north of the old city at a distance of three kilometres from Ahmedabad Railway station. Built in 1848 by Sri Kesarsing Hatheesing (some sources mention the name as Maganbhai Hutheesing) and designed by Premchand Salat, this temple is dedicated to Dharmnath, the 15th Jain Tirthankara/Jina/apostle (teacher).

It has been named after its founder Seth Hathee Singh, a prosperous Jain merchant. The temple is a double-storied construction with a dome on the front side while the sides are embellished with lavishly carved-out balconies. The temple has a cemented courtyard that is enclosed by a row of cloisters. The 52 shrines surrounding the main temple have an image of a Tirthankara.

The Hutheesing Jain Temple is a magnificent temple complex, the temple is an architectural marvel built in beautiful pure white marble and profusely decorated with rich carvings. The temple is a double-storied construction that has a huge dome on the front, the other two sides of the temple consist of lavishly carved out galleries, protruding porches on three sides with brilliantly decorated columns and figural brackets, paved courtyards and enclosed by a row of cloisters and has 52 shrines in its spacious courtyard. Each of the shrines consists of an image of a Tirthankara.

Additional Information

Mahavir Stambha, which is 78ft in height, is a recent addition to this beautiful temple and has been inspired by the well-known tower at Chittor in Rajasthan. The tower is situated at the front entrance of the temple. Some of the motifs in the tower design are reminiscent of the Sultanate minarets of the Mughal period.
